WISDOM TO APPLY IN

THE CORPORATE RING:

• In corporate America, Black executives turn to bobbing and weaving to escape the non-stop blows coming their way. They, too, must maintain balance and uphold their original stance to keep from being thrown off balance and making themselves an even bigger target. Whether in boxing or in corporate America, how a person executes bobbing and weaving tactics often has to do with whether he or she is fighting not to lose or fighting to win.

• Quick thinking is more useful than deep thinking. Simply having one’s feet planted but not reinforcing the stance, leaves one vulnerable to being knocked down or simply tripping and falling. Black executives must be flexible, adaptable, and learn to build their own networks outside of their company walls to gain the support they need to withstand punches.

• One way for Blacks to keep their stance solid in the ring is to obtain a mentor as soon as possible. At every level of development, mentors provide insight that can impact decisions when faced with adversity. Over time, mentors at companies help to navigate and circumvent certain obstacles or to pursue and attain certain opportunities—specifically when facing white opposition.

• Black executives must avoid placating white notions that Black leaders are an extension of white leadership and are only there to provide support. Such arrangements are an affront to Black authenticity and integrity, and they prevent Black leadership from gaining a foothold.

• Corporations that want to see true diversity must accept that the fight can and will turn ugly. Robust D&I departments can help ensure that Black executives have someone in their corner when this happens.
